How to create a resume in Google Docs

When using Google Docs to create your resume, you can choose one of the Google-made resume templates or upload an outside template.

However, the easiest way to create a resume in Google Docs is by using any templates listed in this article. Here are the steps to do so:

  1. Click the hyperlink “Make a copy of this template.”
  2. A pop-up message will appear asking you to confirm you want to make a copy of the template. Click the answer that says “Yes.”
  3. Now, you can replace the filler text with your contact information, summary, skills, work experience and any other knowledge you want to showcase.

If you can’t find or don’t know how to use Google Docs resume templates, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Google Docs application on your browser. You’ll have to log in to your Google account.
  2. Click the “Blank” document option to create a new doc.
  3. Click File > New > From template gallery. Scroll down until you find the “Resumes” category. Once you’ve found a template you like, click it to open it in a new document.
  4. Replace the filler text with your career achievements, education and relevant qualifications.
  1. Sign in to your Google account and open the Drive application.
  2. Click the New+ button at the top left corner of your screen to see a drop-down menu.
  3. Hover over the “Google Docs” option. Another drop-down menu will show two options; click the tab that says “From a template.”
  4. This action will automatically open Google Docs’ template gallery. You can pick your favorite resume template and update it with your information.

If you don’t want to use classic Google Docs templates, you can upload an outside template to edit within Google Docs.

  1. Once logged into your Google account, open the Drive app.
  2. Click the New+ button at the top-left corner of your screen, and choose the File upload option from the drop-down menu.
  3. This action will automatically open your computer’s file finder, where you can search for your desired file to upload.
  4. After uploading the file you want, a pop-up message of the ongoing upload will appear. Once the file finishes uploading, click the file name to open it in a Google Docs document.

Google Docs will attempt to open any format and convert it into an editable file. However, in most cases, it will scramble the formatting beyond the point of usability, so keep that in mind when using outside templates.

  • Ensure your resume has consistent formatting, including one-inch margins, font size between 10-12 and line spacing at 1.5. You can find more tips on our resume formats page.
  • Remember to rename your file with your name so recruiters can find your resume faster. A good resume file name is First Name_Last name_Job Title.
  • You can share via Google Docs by clicking the light blue Share button on the top-right corner of your screen and typing your potential employer’s email.
  • Don’t forget to change the access to the document to Anyone with the link and add the person as a Viewer so they can’t make changes to your resume.
  • Optimize your resume with keywords from the job description that help you show recruiters you possess the required skills and qualifications.
  • Use action verbs and concise language when describing your experiences.

Frequently asked questions

How do you choose the right resume template?

Choosing the right resume template for you comes down to understanding your experience level and the company culture of the role you’re applying for. Your resume template should follow a format showcasing your strengths, whether that’s a long career history, a strong set of skills or both!

In terms of template designs, you want to choose a resume template that matches your industry. For instance, you’ll want a simple or professional resume template design for health care, finance or law jobs. You can opt for modern or creative templates for graphic designer or copywriter roles.

Do you have ATS-friendly resume templates to use in Google Docs?

Yes. The six original Google Docs resume templates in this article are entirely ATS-friendly. You can also find more ATS-compliant templates on LiveCareer’s Resume Builder.

How do I make my resume ATS-friendly?

If you want to optimize your resume to bypass any applicant tracking system, you should follow this easy checklist:

  • Avoid images, profile pictures, graphic shapes and ornate designs in your template.
  • Stick to traditional formatting with one-inch margins, line spacing at 1.5 and plenty of white space between your resume sections.
  • Use a professional font like Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman, Georgia or Helvetica.
  • Stay away from multi-column layouts or text boxes. ATS scans text from left to right, so using a one-column resume layout is best.
  • Make sure you include all five essential resume sections with traditional title headings such as “Contact,” “Summary,” “Work Experience,” “Skills,” and “Education.”
  • Tailor your resume for each job application with keywords from the job description and include only your most job-relevant qualifications.

What resume template should I use if I have no experience?

A functional resume template is the best resume template to use when you have no work experience. Our functional resume templates are formatted to showcase your skills in favor of your work experience. They also include a section for a resume objective, which allows you to state your relevant qualifications and career goals.

What resume template should I use if I’m a mid-level professional?

If you’re a mid-level professional, you might apply for a role to progress in your career. In this scenario, the best template to achieve a promotion is the combination resume template. The combination resume format equally focuses on work experience and skills so you can show employers you’re a well-rounded professional.

What resume template should I use if I’m a senior-level professional?

Senior-level job seekers should leverage their rich and extensive career history to land a job. The perfect template to showcase your work experience is the chronological resume template, which most prominently features the work history section.

How do I write a resume if I want to change careers?

If you want to change careers, you should carefully tailor your resume to showcase you possess the essential qualifications to succeed in this new role.

Some ways you can optimize your resume for a career change are to:

  • Focus on transferable skills. Transferable skills refer to any expertise you gained in one industry that you can apply to another industry or job. For example, common transferable skills are project management, people management, proficiency with spreadsheets, communication skills and many more.
  • Compensate for less pertinent work experience with certifications or training that validate your abilities to perform in your new career path. Including a resume section to feature these accomplishments is crucial when transitioning to a different career.
  • Draft a compelling career objective that explicitly lays out your career goals, the reason for this career change and the skills and experiences that will help you thrive in the new role.
