Tips for Personalizing Your
Teen Resume Template
Whether you’ve had after-school or summer jobs in the past, or if you’re looking for your very first one, there are some core qualities all managers desire from their employees. The chief purpose of a resume is to demonstrate these qualities in the context of your schooling, work experience, and background. By personalizing our teen resume template and following the helpful hints below, you’ll be well on your way to landing a new job.
- Stay completely honest. Resist any temptation you might have to pad your resume with exaggerations or fictitious experience. The last thing you want is to get caught in a fib during an interview.
- Take Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) into account. ATSs are computer programs used by many companies to sort through applications. They work by screening for keywords usually found right in the job description. Be sure to include these target words in your resume, but be careful to work them in naturally so they don’t sound forced or awkward.
- Proofread several times. Don’t just rely on spellcheck. It can’t catch every mistake. Read your resume carefully and ask a friend, teacher, or parent to do the same.
- Describe accomplishments with action and result. Sharing your successes and achievements is especially important when you don’t have much work history to reference. Do this clearly by presenting each accomplishment with the action you took and the positive result that came about because of it.
- Make your summary statement shine. This short statement is your chance to put your best foot forward. Mention any pertinent hard skills you have, such as equipment or software expertise, as well as marketable soft skills like initiative and commitment to good customer service.
- Highlight academics. Any hiring manager understands that school is a large part of a teenage applicant’s life. If your grades and other academic or extracurricular pursuits say a lot about your character, work ethic, and value as a potential employee, they deserve a prime spot on your resume.
