In terms of where gossip is most likely to happen, the ranking of locations most likely to breed harmful office chatter are:

  • One-on-one conversations – 36%
  • After-work events or social gatherings – 10%
  • Virtual chats – 4%
  • Meetings – 3%

Methodology

The findings presented were obtained by surveying 1,006 American respondents on February 14, 2025. Participants were queried about the prevalence of office gossip, factors that encourage gossip and its impact on the workplace. They answered different types of questions, including yes/no, open-ended, scale-based questions where respondents indicated their level of agreement with statements, and multiple-choice where they could select from a list of provided options.
