07 August 2008
Careers in hotel and hospitality management offer graduates the chance to progress up the ranks of an organization, as well as the possibility of working in a variety of locations.

The Financial News and Daily Record said the nature of the industry is such that sometimes the name on the manager's door can change "more often that the carpet and wallpaper".

Often this is a voluntary move to another location in order to further a career - although it is not always necessary to up sticks in order to advance.

Bryan Ayer started his hotel career over 20 years as a banquet server, before rising up the ranks to become banquet manager. He is now his hotel's conference services manager and has no thoughts of moving on in terms of either location or employer.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, those working in the hospitality industry have to be flexible not only about where they work but also when they work. As many hotels are open around the clock, managers can often worker longer than their scheduled hours - especially during peak travel times, it said.

In 2006, the hotel industry employed some 1.8 million people overall and the expansion of the sector between 2006 and 2016 is expected to create many more posts.
