Special Education Careers Demand Commitment to Excellence
12 November 2008
A successful career in special education teaching demands a commitment to delivering excellence and a determination to help every student become a success.

Dr Erin Weaver, principal of Central High School, said these are the qualities displayed by her longest-serving teacher, 42-year veteran Anne Holmes, WMGT reported.

"Anne goes beyond the call of duty to make sure that her children are successful not only in the classroom, but in the classroom of life when they get to the world," Dr Weaver commented.

Ms Holmes, who works with Special Ed students who work in career technical labs, said the most rewarding part of a teaching career is seeing students achieve their goals - whether they be graduating from high school or finding a placement in the workforce.

After more than 40 years, she also finds the career has much to offer and has no thoughts of retirement.

She told the site: "I've had great administrators, great teachers that I work with and I love my students. Why leave?"

According to the Bureau for Labor Statistics, special education teachers held around 459,000 jobs in 2006. By 2016, the professional is expected to grow by 15%.
