Unemployment may be on the rise nationwide, but that doesn't mean you'll fall victim to the trend - especially when you find ways to "recession-proof" your career. This week, Randy Wolf from the Robert Half staffing company talked to The Times of Ottawa (Illinois) about things workers can do to advance despite the current economy. Wolf emphasizes the importance of developing new skills and encourages workers to find out which particular ones are in demand for their particular industry. "Companies need professionals who can identify cost-savings and improve efficiencies," he said. Another way to recession-proof your career is to make yourself "indispensable" by consistently taking on challenging projects, according to Wolf. "Maintain focus on producing high-quality work and try not to be overly distracted by what may or may not happen," he adds. For those who are facing an imminent layoff, Wolf advises taking just as steady of an approach. He points out that "you want your colleagues and manager to have a good impression of you" and goes on to cite the importance of networking, both before and after a layoff. "It's OK to ask your manager if you should be concerned," said Wolf. |
