Accounting Can Be A Fascinating Career

Demand for accountants is expected to remain healthy in the coming years.
The current economic climate doesn't have to frighten you away from pursuing a financial career. In fact, accounting is one industry that can be fairly recession-proof.

"Accounting is a very highly sought after degree," Anita Davis of Mountain State University told WVNS-TV in West Virginia. Davis added that forensic accounting is also a strong career option. "Since Enron, and with the financial crisis going on now, they need this not just to investigate companies but in the long run to protect companies from potential lawsuits," she said.

The Internal Revenue Service has been working to generate interest in forensic accounting with the "Adrian Project," sending agents around the country to work with students who may be interested in such a career.

According to accountingweb.com, the IRS agents set up mock criminal investigations where students learn everything from high-tech methods to traditional practices such as interviewing suspects.

"Many forensic accountants work closely with law enforcement personnel and lawyers during investigations and often appear as expert witnesses during trials," says the Bureau of Labor statistics website, which projects an 18 percent jump in demand for accounting professionals by 2016, largely due to tighter financial regulations.
